Ring Chemistry
Simple large scale routes to novel fused ring systems containing boron, nitrogen and carbon atoms from commercially available boron hydrides and organonitrogen compounds were discovered. These routes also give multigram quantities of N,N’,N’’-trialkylborazines. These are far superior to the usual alkylamine-borane thermolyses where quantities of the borazines obtained are limited by safety due to hydrogen evolution during the thermolyses. In collaboration with Brydson and Greatrex of Leeds, we obtained homogeneous amorphous thin films of boron carbonitride (BCN) from thermolyses of trialkylborazines.
